João R. Mesquita (D.V.M., M.Sc.; Ph.D.) is a Professor in the Department of Zootechnics, Rural Engineering and Veterinary (Veterinary Section) at the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, Head of the BSL-3 laboratory, having published 44 articles in peer-reviewed Scopus indexed international journals, several chapters, and performed more than 100 oral and poster communications in Scientific Conferences. He is a member of the Scientific Council of his Institution and takes part as editorial board member of the Open Microbiology Journal and the Open Infectious Diseases Journal. Prof. Mesquita has been an ad hoc reviewer for nearly 100 manuscripts from many reputable Scientific Journals including Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases, Virologica Sinica, Zoonoses and Public Health, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Journal of Medical Virology, Veterinary Microbiology, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Journal of Applied Microbiology, Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, Infection, Genetics and Evolution, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Transboundary and Emerging Diseases and Plos ONE. Prof. Mesquita has served various Scientific Workgroups and consultancies for governmental institutions. His research interests are focused on animal and human virology, mainly on zoonotic viruses, with special interest on surveillance tools and epidemiology.
